Welcome

Real vs pretend: look closely to know

Hi there! Welcome to a lesson about knowing what is real.

Look at the two dogs up there. One is a real dog. One is a toy dog.

How can you tell which one is real? You can look. You can touch. You can listen. A real dog is warm, it moves, and it barks. A toy dog stays still and quiet.

We do not just guess. We check for ourselves! Let's learn how.

Which Dog Is Real?

Let's think about the two dogs.

How can you tell if a dog is a REAL dog and not a toy dog?

How We Check

We Have Great Tools!

You have wonderful tools for checking what is real. Can you guess what they are?

Your eyes to look. Your hands to touch. Your ears to listen. Your nose to smell!

When you want to know something, you can use these tools to check for yourself.

Let's try it with a cup of juice.

Is the Cup Really Full?

Imagine a cup on the table. Someone says, "That cup is full of juice!"

Your cup looks full of juice. How can you know for SURE that it is really full?

When Someone Tells You

You Can Always Check

Sometimes a grown-up tells you something. Sometimes a book or a screen or a toy tells you something too.

Most of the time, that is just fine! But here is a special power. You can still look and check for yourself.

If a screen says it is raining, you can look out the window! If a toy says it is bedtime, you can ask a grown-up. Checking makes you a good thinker.

You do not have to know everything right away. You can always find out.

The Green Sky

Here is a puzzle. A picture on a screen says, "The sky is green!"

But you look out your window, and the sky is blue.

The screen says the sky is green, but you looked and it is blue. Which one is true, and how do you know?

You Did It!

You Did It! 🌟

You learned so much today! Let's remember what a good checker does:

- We use our eyes, hands, and ears to know what is real

- A real dog moves and is warm; a toy dog stays still

- We do not just guess, we check for ourselves

- If someone tells us something, we can still look and find out

You did a really, really great job today!

What Will You Check?

You are a great checker now!

What is something YOU want to look at closely or check for yourself? Anything is okay!
