Steps for Everything!
Hello, friend! 👋
Today we learn about something super cool called an algorithm.
An algorithm: a set of steps for doing something.
You already know lots of algorithms!
Brushing your teeth has steps:
1. Pick up your toothbrush.
2. Put toothpaste on it.
3. Brush your teeth.
4. Rinse & spit!
See? Steps in order. That is an algorithm! 🎉
Getting dressed has steps too: underwear first, then pants, then shoes. Socks BEFORE shoes — always!
Making a sandwich has steps: bread, peanut butter, jelly, then the other piece of bread on top.
Computers follow algorithms too. Every time your tablet shows you a video or a game, it follows steps — just like you do!
Your Bedtime Algorithm
Think about getting ready for bed tonight.
Maybe you brush your teeth. Maybe you put on pajamas. Maybe you get a hug.
Those steps happen in a special order!
Putting Things in Order
Sorting: Putting Things Where They Belong
Sorting means putting things in order.
Big to small. Small to big. Same colors together.
You sort things all the time!
🖍️ Sorting crayons: all the reds together, all the blues together, all the greens together.
🧦 Sorting socks: all the short socks in one pile, tall socks in another.
🧸 Sorting toys: cars in the car bin, blocks in the block bin.
Computers sort things too — like putting your favorite songs in order!
Sort the Crayons!
You have 5 crayons all mixed up in a pile:
blue, red, yellow, green, blue
You want to sort them so all the same colors sit together.
Two Ways to Find Something
Where Did That Toy Go?
Imagine your favorite stuffed animal is hiding somewhere in your room.
You have two ways to find it:
Way A: Look at EVERY SINGLE THING until you find it.
Look under the bed. Look in the closet. Look in every corner. Keep looking until — found it!
Way B: Remember where you put it. You always put your stuffed animal in the toy box. Go straight there!
Way A always works — but it takes a long time.
Way B is super fast — but only works if you put things away in the right spot.
🖥️ Computers do the same thing! Finding something in a messy pile takes longer. Finding something in an organized spot — much faster!
That is why your family might say: put things away where they belong. It is not just tidy — it is an algorithm!
Where Do You Look First?
Your favorite stuffed animal could be anywhere in your room.
Here is what you know about your room:
📚 Books live on the shelf.
🧸 Toys live in the toy box.
👕 Clothes live in the drawer.
Your stuffed animal is a toy.
