Hello, Reader
Welcome, Reader!
Today you will meet six new friends. They are called the Letter People.
Every Letter Person is a letter, and every letter makes a sound. When you put their sounds together, you can read words! That is the big secret of reading.
Let us meet the first three. Say each sound out loud with me.
Meet Samuel Sloth
This is Samuel Sloth. Samuel is the letter S.
Samuel says a long, slow sound: "sssss", as slow and soft as a sloth hanging in a tree.
Say hello to Samuel, then try his sound: ssssss.
Meet Annie Ant
This is Annie Ant. Annie is the letter A.
Annie says a short, quick sound: "a-a-a", like the start of ant and apple.
Say hello to Annie, then try her sound: a-a-a.
Meet Tyler Toucan
This is Tyler Toucan. Tyler is the letter T.
Tyler says a tapping sound: "t-t-t", like his big beak tapping a branch.
Say hello to Tyler, then try his sound: t-t-t.
What Does Samuel Say?
Which Letter Person?
You are a Sound Detective now! Listen to a sound and find the Letter Person who makes it.
Remember: Samuel Sloth (S) says "sss". Annie Ant (A) says "a-a". Tyler Toucan (T) says "t-t-t".
Push the Sounds Together
Here is the magic of reading. When you push Letter People sounds together, they make a word.
Watch: Samuel says "sss". Annie says "a". Tyler says "t".
Now push them together slowly, then faster: s...a...t. sss-aaa-t. sat!
You just read a word! Let us try one more.
Meet Pablo Penguin
This is Pablo Penguin. Pablo is the letter P.
Pablo says a little puff of air: "p-p-p". Hold your hand in front of your mouth and feel the puff!
Say hello to Pablo, then try his sound: p-p-p.
Find a Sound in Your World
Letter People sounds hide everywhere: in your room, in your toys, in your favorite snacks.
Pablo Penguin (P) says "p-p-p". Now go hunting for his sound.
Meet Izzy Iguana
This is Izzy Iguana. Izzy is the letter I.
Izzy says a short, tiny sound: "i-i-i", like the middle of pin and sit.
Say hello to Izzy, then try her sound: i-i-i.
Meet Ned Newt
This is Ned Newt. Ned is the letter N.
Ned says a humming sound right through his nose: "nnnnn".
Say hello to Ned, then try his sound: nnnnn.
That is all six! Now you know enough sounds to read a whole story.
