Hello, Reader

Welcome back, Reader!

Today you get a pocketful of special words called star words.

Some little words show up SO often in books that readers just KNOW them at a glance. You do not sound them out slowly. You take a snapshot with your eyes and remember them, like the faces of good friends.

A few star words do not follow the Letter People rules. For example, the does not sound like "t-h-e", and said does not sound like "s-a-i-d". That is okay! We learn these by sight, with lots of friendly practice.

Ready to collect some star words? Let us go!

This word is everywhere! But here is the funny part: the does not sound like "t-h-e". You cannot sound it out neatly. You just snapshot it with your eyes and know it: the.

Now find it hiding in a sentence.

Point to the star word in this sentence: "the dog ran." Which word is the star word?

Using "and"

Here is a star word that joins things together:

and

We use and to put two things side by side: bread and butter, you and me, a cat and a dog.

Let us finish a sentence with it.

Finish this with a star word: "a cat ___ a dog." What joining word goes in the blank?

Which One Is a Star Word?

Remember, star words are the little words we just KNOW by sight. Some other words we sound out with our Letter People, like "cat" or "sun".

Which of these is a star word you learned today: the, cat, sun?
