Glossary
Definitions for terms used across nuhomeschool & unhomeschool.
Accounts & Subscription
- solo
- Base individual membership unit. Any person (gifted student, continuing learner, or partner) holds a solo. A family always contains at least one solo as head of house. Gifted children may hold solo status within a family.
- family
- One or more head-of-house solos together with their family members. All members share unlimited curriculum access under one subscription. Head-of-house solos manage student accounts and calendar schedules.
- co-op
- A collective of family units. Each family retains its own head-of-house solos; the co-op coordinates shared schedules, group lessons, and supply chains across families.
- partner
- A solo who has leveled up via entrepreneur track. Partners bring a domain enterprise to the unturf network & connect it to child entities through machine learning specification bridges. Partners remain solos: individual contributors, not institutions.
- head of house
- A solo within a family who holds account responsibility: manages students, sets schedules, and controls family settings. Every family has at least one head of house. Co-ops contain multiple families, each with its own heads of house.
Curriculum
- nu
- Pre-K through grade 12 curriculum engine, served at nuhomeschool.com. Covers toddler, preschool & all K-12 grades. Adaptive feedback meets students where they stand.
- un
- Curriculum for gifted students, continuing education & extracurricular, served at unhomeschool.com. Lessons go beyond K-12 scope: professional trades, post-secondary subjects, entrepreneurship, machine learning & cross-discipline geometry.
- activity
- A single curriculum unit: what you do in a session. Activities contain one or more sections, each broken into steps. An activity may take the form of a reading, a worksheet, a project, a discussion, or a hands-on exercise. The terms activity & lesson refer to the same thing.
- section
- A named grouping of steps within an activity. Sections organize an activity into coherent phases: introduction, concept, practice & review form common patterns. Completing all steps in a section advances to the next.
- step
- Smallest unit of an activity. A step presents content (text, diagrams, video) or poses a question. Question steps wait for a response before advancing. Content-only steps advance automatically.
- kanban
- A visual board that shows tasks as cards moving through columns (backlog, in progress, done). nuhomeschool kanban tracks student assignments & school-year milestones. unhomeschool kanban covers entrepreneurship, eight forms of capital & supply chains.
- mnemonic
- A short phrase generated for each family account: easy to remember, easy to share. Identifies a family without exposing personal information. Shown on family dashboard; useful for co-op coordination.
Platform & Community
- unturf
- Umbrella organization connecting all child entities (nuhomeschool, unhomeschool, uncloseai, unsandbox, unfirehose, remarkbox, make_post_sell). Partners bring domain enterprises into the network. Machine learning tools mediate between entities; no entity owns another.
- enterprise
- A domain of knowledge, practice, or production that a solo brings to the unturf network. Enterprises stay with their owners. Connecting an enterprise to unturf means writing a machine learning specification bridge, not transferring ownership or restructuring.
- eight forms of capital
- Living, material, financial, intellectual, experiential, social, cultural & spiritual capital. Curriculum grows all eight simultaneously, never optimizing one at the expense of others. Financial capital represents one of eight, not the primary metric.
- quadrivium
- Four organizing principles that guide the platform: truth, freedom, harmony, & love. Truth: open curriculum, no black boxes. Freedom: voluntary participation, no tracking without consent. Harmony: appropriate inputs for all outputs. Love: the system serves the human, not the reverse.
- permacomputer
- A permanent, resilient computing platform designed to outlast vendor cycles, funding rounds & platform shifts. Permacomputer infrastructure underlies unturf: open source, self-hosted, minimal dependencies & accessible without JavaScript.
- ML bridge
- A machine learning specification that connects two enterprises within the unturf network. A machine learning bridge identifies a gap between two domains, writes a classification or generation spec & lets machine learning tools handle mediation. Writing the spec provides the human contribution; running inference provides the machine's.
